What power cable gauge do I use to hook up a car amplifier? Most amplifier kits appear to be under sized.? Many of the complete amplifier kits, example rated for a 700 watt amplifier come with a 10 gauge power cable. Many of the gauge charts from the online car audio techs, would recommend a 4 gauge wire, but they sell the amp kits with the 10 gauge. I guess bigger is better, more efficient and safer for the installation, but I would expect them to add some * adjacent to the kit specs with their recommendation.

benzo_72 replied: "Well in this case bigger is most of the time better. I used a 2 gauge for both of my amps. 2 guage is thick enough to handle alot of juice! And your right, 10 guage isnt always the best size for bigger amps. I assume you are talking about a big amp right? My 2 amps, one put out 1600 rms, and my amp for the high's put out 200 rms. And both of these amps ran off of the same power cable with no problems ever. Now if you are going to be running a big amp or amps, dont forget to also help out your cars alternator by also running a DEEP CYCLE battery, and also a recomended 3 farod capasitor! Good luck!!"

inktownlegend replied: "here is a chart to help you out for subs i would go no smaller than 4gauge remember that if you want to upgrade in the future you will have to remove all of the old wire if its not thick enough and its more time/cost effective to go with the thicker stuff from the gate and use a distribution block to down size the wire at the amp"

gacsmokie replied: "with that kind of amp go with 8 gauge"

How do i know that kind of amplifier kit i need for my subwoofer? I have a cvr12. It is a dual 4ohm voice coil. The amp is a KICKER ZX400.1class D.

georgewillings replied: "The amp kit is not for the sub woofer, but it is for the amp, hence amp kit. Seeing how the amp is a 400 watt amp, go with an 8 gauge kit."

(ETI) Elite's Top Installer replied: "8 gauge kit is good enough"

kurt replied: "I would go with 4 AWG in case you ever decide to upgrade your system so that you won't have to rerun the wires. Just my opinion."

Cap replied: "Yeah 8 gauge. Here's a amp kit for a great prices. "

Are car Amplifiers and Amplifier Kits Brand Specific, or can you Mix and match brands? my amp is: 1000 Watt Amp MA Audio M1900xe Digital Class D Possible Amp Kits: A Friend suggested 4 gauge, is this a good suggestion?

BFH replied: "Universal for almost any of them."

ididntdoit99 replied: "It's just wire... they are universal."

chris g replied: "if you want a 2nd amp for your highs, or possibly more power later, i'd go oct guage (if its a 1000 watts true power)"

Brandon E replied: "wire is wire. 4 AWG is a good suggestion. brandon E, live sound engineer"

Rick G replied: "first off wire is not wire... for mainly two reasons. the first and most important is many cheaper companies are including the protective jacket in the ga size, and to me that should be illegal, but it happens way to often in places like ebay. secondly, having more strands in the wire does two things, one increases its power capabilities and two makes it more flexible for installation. here is a place that another top 10 contributor recomended to me and with no researve i will continue to use them and recomend them. they make a great cable at a great price. it compares to JL and moster at a fraction of the cost.... because you buy factory direct... you can search ebay as well, they sell closeout, and open box stuff there all the time just search for them."

Do you need the RCA wire when hooking up an amplifier in your car? i just got an infinity basslink 2 amplifier and subwoofer....its cheap but its better then nothing...anyway i bought an amplifier kit thinking it would have everything i need to make it go bump....it came with the power wire, the ground wire, the fuse, the REM wire, but no RCA wire...is the rca a must to get the subwoofer to work? I got it for free so there were no instructions with it

G51044 & GTR replied: "For the Basslink, you just tap into the rear speakers in your car for the signal to the Basslink. It should've come with instructions. Have Fun!"

Viorel I replied: "Well..I've got a Jbl 400w 2channel output. So: first you must hook your amp to one output plug on you car's stereo, then hook the capacitor(if there's one in the package) observing the scheme, and last hook your base tube to one output plug of the amp..That simple! A cable with rca connectors is not compulsory...Just go and see how you can take audio signal out of your stereo..."

Which amplifier kit do I need? I am installing a 12" L5 Kicker subwoofer which RMS is at 600 watts. I need to know how many gauges or anp kit I need to install in my car. I'm also throwing in an amp to hook up with my 4 door speakers to install in my car running at about 500 RMS. Do you know of any amp kits that I can get to install 2 amplifiers or any other informaton would be nice? Thank you.

Lety K replied: "This kit is Pretty nice, should be enough if you use ebay "

Nm replied: "do not use less than 6 gauge, i suggest 4, thats what i used which should be enough for at least 1200 max watts. there is no need for 0 gauge unless you're running way more than that"

I have an amplifier kit that's for 1200 watts. I was wondering if it could be used for a 1400 watt amp? I found a chart that said the gauge of wire was the same so i thought it might be possible

datnukka replied: "Yea"

William B replied: "More than likely you will be fine, if its 4 gauge wire, id say that your fine if its above that i would suggest going with 4 gauge because the current draw of your amp could fry your power wire. It happend to me,and never buy anything from walmart like SCOSHE,my power wire from them melted!"

Does anybody know the differnce between an 8Gauge & a 4Gauge amplifier kit? My Amplifier is 1600W Peak & 800 Total RMS.. and the SUB it will be powering is 1200W Max, & 600W Total RMS.

johnny swanberg replied: "8 guage is smaller than 4 guage, thus 8 will deliver less power."

iLL_TeK_NeekZ replied: "Well...Get The 4 Gauge, It Allows More Power To Be Sent Through The Wires To The Amp From The Battery....An 8 Gauge Would Probley Shut Down Your Amp, Protection Light Would Come On. Not Getting Enough Power...But That's All...8 Gauge = 200-600 Watt Amps, 4 Gauge = 700-2000 Watts, 0 Gauge = Anything Over 2000"

burninlummox replied: "Use 4 guage for your application."

jon k replied: "ok the first two guys are completely wrong. there really is no difference between 8 gauge and 4 gauge. 4 gauge is a much thicker cable and will give u less of a chance of overloading your electrical system and blowing out the amp, the fuse on the amp kit, and/or something in the electrical system of the car. im lookin at the specs of your amp vs. your sub and i see a definate mismatch which will make it seem as if your going to blow your sub up. NEVER overpower a subwoofer, you can always underpower it. your amplifier will be sending over 200 more watts than the sub can handle rms wise and 400 peak wise. stay with the 4 gauge and the electricals of your car will be fine. my advice to you, is either buy a more powerful sub or a less powerful amp to save you from the trouble of blowing the sub out. hope this helped you out bro"

sparky3489 replied: "Ok jon k is completely wrong, there IS a difference between guages. 4 guage can carry more current than 8 guage without heating up and measurable voltage drop, ohm's law! Otherwise he is correct on the power mismatch."

Adam replied: "that is the wire guage it goes from 1/0, 4,8 12, 14, 16 those are the standard sizes, the larger the cable,1/0, the more easily the power will be delivered. From the battery you want to use either 1/0 or 4 guage and then from your subs to the amp probably 8 or 12."

puresplprix replied: "Jon k your a moron you say theres no diffrence then you list about 4, ANYWAY to the question dont even waste your time with anything less than 4 gauge its not worth the price and if you wanna get a bigger amp later on your gonna have to pull the 8 guage out and re run the 4. Beware of 4 gauge kits that just have really thick insulation and the actual wire is still 8 guage, I had a friend that didnt know much about sound systems that went and bought a kit and got this. Also dont worry about a amp with too much power, just be smart and dont turn the volume up all the way, or you can set the gain a little under what its supposed to be set at so that your radio will never turn the amp up all the way even if its up all the way. I actually prefer a amp to be more powerful than the speakers so i can get the full usage out of the subs without testing the limits of the amp because this is where distortion begins to come into play when you start stressing components"

Guitar and amplifier Kit ? Okay, so I want to get an electric guitar kit for chritmas. My parents have a budget of about $100.00 - $200.00 AUD (shipping exlcluded), they don't mind spending up to $50.00 on shipping costs. Anyway, I have found this kit straight from the factory: # If you guys could check this out for me and tell me if it is any good? I am basically a beginner, but now a lot about playing, and I can handle an electric guitar pretty good for my age (14). ALSO, could you please find out and tell me what brand the guitar and amplifier is? Because I don't think it says what it is appart from SANSUI, but I've never heard of the brand before. Thanks a lot!! Reply ASAP please.

Sam I™ ©® replied: "Yes, that's alright and good value but with a budget of $200 trust me you can afford to be a lot more imaginative in my opinion. Check these links. The amp in the link is a good size though. Great beginner's guitars: Bit expensive: Here's a good kit: This is quite bold: Sometimes getting amps separate off places like Argos is the better option. Cheap and good quality, I find. Hope that helps and happy shopping."

lukegj.potter replied: "Maybe you'd want to go to a guitar shop and actually play a guitar that you are looking at. I learned this the hard way, you go to a phone shop to buy a phone, a shoe shop to buy shoes, etc..."
